What style of art really makes you angry?

Art should make you angry. It should hit a nerve. It should annoy you,
make you uncomfortable, and force you to come to terms with it and love
it, or walk away.

The art that roils me is work that is pretentious, that aspires to
"artiness" and really can’t call the bluff when the cards are shown.
I’d rather look at work by the most rank beginner than someone who makes
art solely to be known as an artist.

Do you ever expect to get rich/richer out of art?

I would like to at least sell a few things.

Was art your first love or do you have another passion?

I have done many other things, but like a junkie that is always thinking
about his/her fix, that art itch has always with me.

Who do you feel has influenced art most this century?
Guston said the most influential movement in this century was
Surrealism. I think I have to agree. I also think that Picasso is
definitely NOT the artist of the century. I think, as far as painting is
concerned, there are a lot more interesting artists whose efforts broke
more significant ground, Max Beckmann, for one.

Which medium do you feel is the current spokesman of the arts?

The art world is in a total shambles. It’s anyone’s guess. I think TV
and film have more of an influence than work being shown by the
flavor-of-the-month at the big galleries in New York. I think the real
art being made today is waiting to be discovered, perhaps in the next
century.

What would you like to be better at, and why?

I think every painter dreams of having the kind of facility with paint
akin to someone like Sargent. I doubt that is ever going to happen, but
it is something to strive for. I think one’s technical facility should
ever grow and the only answer is to work constantly, even if it means
only an hour or two after a draining eight hours at a computer screen.
