What style of art really makes you angry?
I don't get angry from any style of art. There is just nothing to get angry
about. I'd imagine that if a painting or sculpture arouses that sort of
emotion in a person then it must be good art. Bad paintings have no effect
on me at all - they leave me completely cold - and there are a lot of bad
paintings out there. The galleries are full of them.
Do you ever expect to get rich/richer out of art?
I certainly hope so. Let's face it, you can't do without money.
Was art your first love or do you have another passion?
I enjoy working on cars. I'm fortunate to own a 1975 Jaguar XJ6C that I'm
trying to keep looking good but living in an apartment makes it tough to
roll up my sleeves and get really dirty.
Who do you feel has influenced art most this century?
Definitely Picasso, Bacon and Moore. I think any figurative artist today
has to embrace the influence of these three artists.
Which medium do you feel is the current spokesman of the arts?
We may be entering some kind of dark age. So much attention is focused on
trying to capture a mass market for the short-term, rather than creating art
of real worth that will last. Ten or 20 years from now most of the
paintings you see around will be in landfill. Almost all of the
high-profile people populating the art-type professions are merely
masquerading as the real thing. There are notable exceptions of course,
such as U2 and Woody Allen and some others I could name, but these are
exceptions and are spread over the range of arts. Worse still, they are not
appreciated nearly enough in their own time. I do not feel that there is
any one medium that can claim dominance from a purist point of view.
What would you like to be better at, and why?
I would like to be better at many things, but if I had to choose one thing
it would probably be painting. There's always room for improvement in my
work. For instance, I've tried to paint a woman's face with all the beauty
and delicacy of a poppy in bloom and just haven't got it yet.
