SAturday 23rd May
Day 2

Grace 1: An Installation at ,
13 Lower Bristol Road, Bath
by:

SAVAGE

Installation opening
6-8.30 pm Sat 23 May.

I asked Andrew, has the installation turned out how you wanted it ?

" I would have liked it sunnier, more light coming through the windows.

I finished it two and a half hours ago...but that's my time schedule, I always work up to the last minute...everything has gone to plan."

"The Installation is meant to be seen from the outside; from the front and from round the back, and hopefully people will be able to smell the perfume...I've completely perfumed it, so when they are wandering round here they might think what's going on here? Cos I've never been so decadent I've never put that much perfume in a pile of rubble in my life before!

It's an expensive pile of rubble... "

What made you choose this building?

"I was wandering around Bath, I wanted somewhere local... and it just appealed to me, you know when you just get an instinct.

I wandered round and tried to get inside it and look round and I thought it was the right building. It's nice and central, I didn't want somewhere really hidden away, cos people would have to make a real effort to find it, I wanted to make an event of something that people saw every day...and just altered the use of it basically."

" I said to somebody today, it's probably it's deathnail... swansong that's the word, it's almost definitely going to be demolished soon."

"It's been derelict for almost ten years!

I wanted to keep everything in there as I found it, people could look around it and just capture a moment in time.

It's just been stopped almost like fallout; that idea of fallout just came to me today. I can imagine it just after a nuclear bomb had gone off.

It's meant to be a very peaceful piece actually, but the smell of perfume is what offends, not the image ...all my work is about facade ;

so from a distance you can't really see much of it... it's just pink, it just looks clean and tidy. The closer you get the more you see it being...

It's also about disguising the smell that's in there cos boy did it stink! It's been used as a public toilet .

Again it's just trying to disguise the signs of aging... that's what it's all about... with perfume, paint and makeup. But highlighting the futility.

This work will be on show for 3 weeks, until it gets boarded up.
