| About the exhibition:
On the pediment of Minerva's temple close by the Roman baths, was the image of a fearsome looking moustached man supporting a veritable bird's nest of a beard, who some think represented Neptune, the mythical god of sea, or springs and rivers - depending upon whether you were a coastal or inland dwelling Roman. Acknowledging his watery influence, in this exhibition members have otherwise deliberately tried to avoid direct references to typical tourist notions of Bath. They have taken a broad view on aspects of the town over the centuries, as well as the relevance of its waters, both hot and cold, towards the life and health of local people and visitors - even if this does include reference to the fact that at one stage, they left the town altogether and flocked to the seaside in their quest for health. |

The exhibiting craftsmen and women, all of whom customarily relate to the Bath and North East Somerset area, consider their making skills just as important as artistic ones. They welcome enquiries and are happy to discuss ways of adapting their work to suit either domestic or smaller commercial situations. |

With the help of a grant from South West Arts, the Craft Guild was originally constituted in 1991 as the Avon Craft Guild. Membership is mostly composed of designer makers resident in the greater Bath area, who earn their living from their craft, either by direct selling, working to commission, running workshops or by part-time teaching. Trade is important but from the outset, members most of whom have received a formal arts training, felt that education, which comes in various guises, is also important. How else to best make potential customers appreciate that it can be more advantageous to commission, rather than to always look to the high street or DIY stores? |

We have exhibited at Ashton Court, Bristol, Bristol Cathedral, Bristol City Museum. Chew Magna and Bath Central Library. Many members exhibit in other parts of the UK or abroad. We are now developing a popular contemporary crafts section. |

. It has always been our view that in addition to fostering a network between individuals such a group should link with business, statutory, voluntary and other specialist craft groups. In the immediate future, through our involvement with the newly formed Bath Area Network for Artists, the B&NES led visual arts and crafts network, we look forward to working more actively in the greater Bath area. . |
