From the Eclipse series by Nell Nile

Eclipse

.

I have used two main recurring symbols in the eclipse work – the Greek cross and concentric circles, both with significant content – the cross represents the fleeting sense of fear and dread that overcomes the viewer when the sun is completely obscured by the moon and the world grows dark for a brief, intense moment.

The concentric circles represent the sun, moon and other planets, which are visible in the darkness of a total eclipse, the vivid colour a reminder of how all-powerful the sun is to this planet.

I discovered, after beginning this series, that concentric circles are a very ancient symbol, carved into rock and standing stones and seems to be a pattern used by ancient man almost universally, for example, by the Australian Aborigines as a symbol for the soul.
