' The Fruit Bowl' by Nell Nile

The Friut Bowl

.

Nell Nile uses chalk pastels to explore her interest in myth and story telling. The pure intense colours, on a large scale, illustrate the characters – gods, animal deities, masked figures and symbolic objects from all cultures and ages – in a form of tableaux, witty, colourful with an edgy sense of danger and darkness.

The narrative works shown here are influenced by visits to various places, Greece, Tunisia, Arizona, U.S.A and trips to more local places such as gardens, cafes and historic sites. I am fascinated by different cultures, particularly the ancient gods and religious imagery from all over the world.
The piece "A Game of Cards" shows Medusa, Ganesh and Baron Samedi, all from different cultural sources and ages, relaxing over a game of cards.

" My earlier narrative work, as seen in these examples, started in the 1980's and although I intend to carry on producing this type of work, I am currently working in an abstract style, still in chalk pastel and on a fairly large scale – 3ft x 3ft an d 4ft x 4ft – building up a body of work based on my experience of a trip to Rajasthan, India in Oct, 97 to see a Total Solar Eclipse".
